Located at the heart of Ang Mo Kio, the town centre is the main commercial and community hub of the housing estate. Long-time businesses spanned the town centre, ranging from film to clothing to food stalls. Built and developed in 1976, it used to host popular places such as the Oriental Emporium, a shopping mall and the Oriental restaurant, a favourite for the celebration of special occasions such as weddings and birthdays during the 1980s. Residents from other towns such as Yishun and Sembawang would patronise these places. The main entertainment facilities consisted of three cinemas, Broadway, Ang Mo Kio Cinema and Jubilee. These locations were used for two purposes - besides entertainment, they served as venues for Kindergarten graduation ceremonies. However, due to the need to constantly upgrade and keep in touch with the changing times, these cinemas were demolished to make way for new shopping malls such as the Ang Mo Kio Hub, built in 2007.
