A joint project by the Singapore and Japanese governments, the Japanese Garden is also known by its Japanese name Seiwaen. It was modelled after the aesthetics of Japanese gardens in the Muromachi period (1392-1568) and the Momoyama period (1568-1615).

The 12.14ha garden features Japanese stone paths, Toro stone lanterns, rock waterfalls and a winding stream. It also contained some 500 tons of rocks from Japan, as well as some 5,000 Nishiki koi (carp) in its waters.
