A buckle with confrontary serpents

This elaborate oblong 'pending' or belt buckle features a central embossed motif of two confronting scaly serpents, which are possibly representations of ‘naga’, facing a gem embedded in a floral motif. The borders of the buckle is embossed with leaf and floral motifs and decorated with granulation. Although this pending was worn by the Bugis, its design reflects a certain degree of Chinese influence. This illustrates how jewellery and accessories reflect the flow of ideas across cultures.
