Keris hilts can be made from a variety of materials from wood, ivory, bone to fossilised mammoth tooth. Hilts are rather like miniature sculptures though designs on them tend to be traditional. With the advent of Islam, the vivid representations of a man or deity evolved and became abstracted into more acceptable forms.
