Seal with image of Hanuman

This white crystal seal displays the monkey Hanuman, a hero from the Hindu epic Ramayana. He is depicted here in flight from the Himalayas, with a special herb to heal those wounded in a battle against the evil Ravana. This crystal has been polished and finely engraved. Clay impressions may have been made from these seals for use as offerings. Alternatively they could have been worn as amulets. Sites in the lower Mekong Delta have yielded a number of quartz crystals with engraved designs. They have been found under boundary stones and the foundations of temples.
