Seabreeze, Moonlight

Born in Singapore in 1955, Lim Tiong Ghee is a self-taught artist renowned for his abstract collages. He was Category Winner (Representational), UOB Painting of the Year Competition in 1984 with his ‘Reflection’ watercolour painting, and in 1989 Lim received the Competition’s Top Award for his wrapping paper collage ‘From the Turtledove’.The ‘Seabreeze’ series captures different moods of sea and land. A sensitive application of his hand-dyed papers reflects Lim’s maturity as an artist, a calm confidence and a sure hand. The restrained palette and simple composition tell the story of Lim walking in Ubud one night while holidaying in Bali. Though there was no illumination from any streetlights, Lim noticed white-painted stones lying on the ground. Enquiring about their purpose he was told these were used to mark the edge of the path so as to guide people walking in the dark.
