Food container

This red and black lacquer container is decorated with Chinese designs and motifs. The container is decorated with ogival panels with phoenixes, peonies, Buddhist emblems and floral motifs.Containers like this would have most likely been used to store food for Indonesian Chinese families and would have been made in Palembang. Palembang has long been an important centre for trade and has attracted people from both within and outside Southeast Asia.
