Teochew door frame

This elaborately carved, lacquered and gilded door frame is a high-quality example of the characteristic craftsmanship of furniture makers in the Teochew region (northern Guangdong and southern Fujian province) of China. The scenes of filial piety and famous Chinese fables are meant to instruct the viewer. Frames like this were commissioned by wealthy merchants in the Teochew region, and also exported to Teochew buyers settled in Southeast Asia. Similar door frames can be found in the ancient houses and ancestral halls in Teochew regions, such as Fuoshan city and Shantou city today.
