Betel box set

This betel box set, used to store and present ingredients used in the practice of betel chewing, was made by Conraetz & Reuter, a silver-making firm in Vienna, Austria. They specialised in “China silver” and objects with Asian-inspired designs. Since betel chewing is unknown in Vienna, this set was probably made for export to Southeast Asia, where the practice was widespread.
