The living quarters of rickshaw coolies in Chinatown

The living conditions of the rickshawman - and Chinese coolies in general - were less than ideal. Their dwellings were often cramped, dark and stifling. Hygiene was also poor, with everyone sharing common kitchens, bathrooms and latrines.
