Soon Thian Kheng is recognised in the Singapore Book of Records as the oldest Chinese Temple in Singapore, established during the reign of Qing Dynasty's Emperor Jiaqing (1796 - 1821).

It was first located at Malabar Street, part of today's Bugis Junction. In 1981, two stone tablets, dust-covered and embedded on the walls of the back hall, inscribed with records of Soon Thian Keing's reconstruction in 1847, were discovered by worshippers.

In 1986 Soon Thian Keing was relocated from Bugis to 175 Albert Street. The temple relocated to its present location at Lorong 29 Geylang and was officially opened in 1994.
